According to Duowei News, on January 12, the government-run China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation has introduced S-26T submarine to the Thailand's defense ministry to enhance the defense relationship of the two countries.
Bangkok has not operated submarines for more than 60 years since it decommissioned its four Matchanu-class submarines. However, Bangkok believes that submarines play an important role in defending its exclusive economic zone in the gulf of Thailand. Bangkok is aiming to procure at least two submarines in Fiscal year 2016 to rebuild its underwater fleet. China is only third to South Korea and France in offering submarines to Thailand.
Behind this potential sale of submarine to Bangkok, China is aiming to gain a possible political, strategic and defense partner in South China Sea with Thailand.
