In an article written by Ridzwan Rahmat for Jane's Defence Weekly, British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Philip Hammond  while giving a lecture at Rajaratnam School of International Studies said Britain's armed forces are ready to get involved in Asia-Pacific if the country's interests are challenged in the region.

Hammond is upset at slow steps being taken in historic reconciliation in spite of economic interconnectedness. As a former Defense Secretary, Hammond said that economical connectedness is not an assurance that regional peace is maintained giving the World War I as an example.

The secretary added that the UK is remained committed to its pacts with four other countries that are members of Five Powers Defence Arrangements such as Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and New Zealand. Hammond also mentioned Royal Navy's participation in conducting relief efforts in the Philippines after the Typhoon Haiyan. "That means we are ready and able to mobilise in support of Asia-Pacific allies, friends, and partners," Hammond added.
