According to Strategy Page's report, PLA has purchased six battalions of made-in-russia S-400 air defense systems to boost its air defense against the US and its allies in the West Pacific region.
A battalion of S-400 consists of eight missile launchers, one control center, one radar and sixteen extra missiles serve as reloads. The launcher can fire two missiles at the same time and is mobile to almost any accessible area. The cost of one battalion is about US$500 million.
The known predecessor of this missile system is s-300. S-400 was named s-300PMU supposedly just an upgrade of s-300m but the outcome of the upgrade project was far more than just another prototype so the russia came up with naming it to S-400. In 2010, Russia commissioned its first s-400.
