According to last year's China Global Times interview with Gary Roughead, former US Chief of Naval Operations said that Beijing must solve its dispute with Asian countries especially with Vietnam and The Philippines in South China Sea (West Philippine Sea.)
Between January 20-21, US Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Russel went to Manila calling China to not escalate tensions with Southeast Asian countries.
Roughead said that the US is legally bound to defend Senkaku Islands under the Japanese administration due to mutual defense treaty between United states and Japan.However, Roughead rejected to give hint under what circumstances the US would go to war with China. But he added that it is more important for Beijing to learn how to settle disputes with Vietnam and the Philippines in a peaceful ways.
