According to a report by Lexington Institute, China would have been facing serious consequences if it actually had attacked US carrier USS Washington. The report came out following the confirmation from Pentagon that the rumor spread on Jan. 16 from a twitter account was false. Rear Admiral John Kirby, spokesman of Department of Defense denied the rumor and said that the ship was docked for maintenance.

Five years ago, an American defense expert Loren Thompson said in an article for Lexington Institute that Chinese attack against a US carrier would be regretful and devastating for China that losing just one carrier would be a massive blow that would bounce back to China with the evaporation of China's trillion dollar reserves in just whole night.

If China would attack a US carrier by missile or aircraft, China's supply overseas would be cut off quickly. It would happen just before the US even launch an attack against China. Thompson added that the US could not be absolutely certain that Beijing would not be someday foolish enough to attack a US carrier. "...we can be pretty damned sure that they would soon realize they had made a big mistake," Thompson added.
