The China News Service reported on Jan.16 that PLA has deployed its new Huanggang-class Type 054A multi-role frigate for People's Liberation Army East Sea Fleet. The construction for the said frigate with pennant number 557 was started in April 2013 and put into service on Jan.16.
The frigate is armed with eight YJ-83 infra-red-guided missile which the PLA clamied to be a supersonic anti-ship missile and 32 HQ-16 radar-guided SAM missiles.
The report also suggests that bay fixtures have been added to the ship that will give the ship more capabilities when instruments like towed array sonar systems are attached to the fixtures. Towed sonar is used for underwater anomaly detection, a process used in detecting submarines.
Also, taks about additional weapon systems have been circulating in a Chinese military forum website.
