As part of the delayed US$81 billion project 75I of Indian Navy, India invited Japan to join the project for six diesel-electric submarines with the capabilities of air independent propulsion and land attack.
New Delhi has asked Tokyo for a consideration of building the 4,200-ton Soryu-class submarines in India, according to Jane's Defense Weekly.
Australia is also considering Japanese Soryu-class subs to replace its obsolete Collins-class submarines. Japan currently is operating seven Soryu-class vessels.
Project 75I of India aims to increase its navy's 11 submarines to 24. The said project is expected to be a partnership project of an Indian shipyard and the winning bidder. Companies that joined the bid are Russia-based Rosonboronexport, Navantia Spain, HDW Germany and DCNS France.
The project also aims to expand India-Japan strategic partnership since both countries have territorial disputes with China.
